Turn on Haunches Right
Turn on the forehand
Move the horse’s haunches to the RIGHT, to turn on the forehand right.
Move the horse’s haunches to the LEFT, to turn on the forehand Left.
For a good quality turn on the forehand the back legs should circle around the front legs, with the inside hind crossing well over in front of the outside leg, moving away from the rider’s leg. The horse should pick up and put down the inside front leg in the same place (or as near as possible).
With a slight bend, I keep my hands right over my horse’s shoulder.
My inside (left rein) is holding the horse’s Left front leg (pivot leg) from traveling around and thats is where I keep my weight.
I bend my inside leg from the knee and place it almost touching the hip of the horse. Twisting my pelvis to the outside will move the horse’s hip to the outside under his belly and then ride forward. Ride one step at the time. Do not let him rush into the turn.
